When it comes to the floral industry, companies face a long list of challenges that contribute to a large environmental footprint: from shipping foreign blooms and using non-recyclable materials, to creating significant organic waste. The shops are often under pressure to keep the inventory high to be perceived successful and attractive to customers.
Committing to breaking the cycle of waste meant refusing some of the traditional models of running a flower company.
The first steps we took were to eliminate the use of materials like floral foam and plastic wrap, source flowers locally wherever possible, compost all organic waste and offer beautiful flowers in a mindful way. The next decision was made to offer Subscription model as our main service. This allows us to only source the flowers needed for each set of arrangements. With no extra stock on hand, there are no unused flowers to throw away.
In fact, we’ve never thrown away our flowers. We gather gently used stems from the events and photoshoots and slip them into beautiful bedside bouquets and we donate them to hospitals, hospices and long-term care facilities at the organizations that we believe in. For example, we’ve partnered with BLOOM GROUP that responds to some of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside’s most urgent needs by providing housing, social and health services. Even in times of COVID-19 our brides often choose to donate their bouquets to senior homes.
Volunteers deliver this recycled love to area patients.
*We welcome donations from growers, neighbourhood gardens and corporate and private events. We’d also love to invite volunteers to share the joy of flowers with us. Reach out to know more: firstname.lastname@example.org (604) 283 2254.
